F That: Hair color—these 12 women will convince you to stop dyeing your gray hair

Whether covering gray or getting a few highlights, more than 70% of women in the U.S. color their hair. Clearly the social pressure to dye is high. But these 12 women, and many others on social media and beyond, are choosing to embrace their natural silvers.

There are plenty of good reasons to do so. Many of these women write that they feel at peace and more like themselves once they ditch the dye. Plus, they’re saving gobs of money, not to mention hours in the stylist’s chair.

Even more importantly, hair color has been associated with numerous allergic reactions and even diseases including cancer. Just yesterday, a study published in the International Journal of Cancer that looked at 47,000 American women found women of color who use permanent hair dye were 45 percent more likely to develop breast cancer versus an increased risk of 7 percent among white women. The reason for the discrepancy between white and black women is unclear, but several other studies have found an increased cancer risk across the board among all women.

But the reason that seems most prevalent among silver sisters on social media is the camaraderie. Instagram feeds including @grombre, @silversistersinternational, and @artinaging highlight women who are going natural. The hashtag #grayhair has 715,000 posts on Instagram, #grayhairdontcare has more than 136,000 posts; #silversisters has more than 90,000. Allowing those whites to peek through or take over your entire head is a little less scary when you’ve got hundreds of women cheering you on and supporting your choice.

I spent years trying to cover up my laughter lines and worrying about looking older … but after I stopped dyeing my hair and allowed my authentic self to surface, I found those lines didn’t bother me anymore, in fact i actually like them .. best decision I’ve ever made .. who else has had this experience? #authenticself #beauthentic #authentic #agepositive #oribebrightblonde #silversisters #whitehair #whitehaircolor #selfacceptance #whitehairdontcare #silverhairjourney #silvasisters #greyhair #ditchthedye #grombre #silverhairdontcare #goinggreygracefully #greyhairdontcare #greyhairtrend #greyhairmovement #grayhair #grayhairdontcare #ditchthedye thedye #grayhairmovement #greypride #graypride #grombre #shadesofsilver #grauehaare #cabelosbrancos #gogrombre

This beautiful client came to me from ocean side seeking silver hair to match her roots. I lightened the whole head in foils just the colored hair by taking very thin sections in lots of foils using the amazing extra blonde by @oligopro with 20 vol and the amazing @olaplex until I reached level 10 natural blonde and toned the hair with @wellahairusa blondor new permanent toner 1/2 pale silver and 1/2 pale platinum with 2 capful brass kicker mixed with 6 vol for 30 minutes. Olaplex number 2 for 20 min, shampoo, cut and style with round brushes. Did the whole transformation in 7 hours. —————————————————— #behindthechair #americansalon #modernsalon @behindthechair_com @american_salon @modernsalon #tustinhairstylist #tustinsalon #tustinhair #irvinehair #irvinehairstylist #irvinesalon #irvinebalayage #balayagehair #balayageombre #balayagehighlights #orangecountysalon #orangecountyhairstylist #silverhair @wellaeducation #greyhairdontcare #silversisters @cosmoprofbeauty @saloncentric #olaplex @wellahair #hudabeauty ‎‏#fashionarttut #hair_videos #hairstylesvideos #peinadosvideos #justhairvids #hairvideos #hairvideo #peachyqueenblog @hair.videos @peinadosvideos @hairvideodiary @styleartists @glam.video @hair.tv @awesomemakeu.p @hudabeauty @hairglamvideos

No filter, 📷 no hair dye, 💇🏼‍♀️no f*^•s given 😉 This is my Gray Hair Journey!Dye free since 7/1/19. 🎉 🥰 I’ve been held hostage by my hair all my life. I’ve always had long thick hair, since I was 5 or 6 years old & people used to chase me down the street just to tell me how beautiful it was. I was pet like a golden retriever and I’m not even exaggerating. I grew up with an image that I was my Hair. I followed all the trendy cuts, colors, treatments & even a perm, can’t even talk about that without crying, I’ve done some damage for sure with all the processes and tools over the decades. So last year I said screw it, I’m going natural. Not even sure what my natural is, was but I knew the gray would be prominent because I had spent every 3 weeks and 3 hours an appointment covering it up. I have the thickest hair on the planet and it’s a production to even blow it dry so can you imagine the time I have to block out of my day to color, blow and, oh wait, haven’t even talked about the bangs. It’s extra on so many levels, 💰 ⏰, & it’s not about the money per say but the hours to cover something up for barely 3 weeks at a time is like chasing my tail. I’ve found so many women like me who are going through this exciting #transition and I was inspired and felt confidant in my choice to go #dyefree So this is me, bout 7 months approx. #noturningback #thefoodathlete ™ 💪🏼💚

I have a cold so I feel tired and want to stay in bed.⁣ ⁣ No makeup since celebrating the new year, and one one the things I think has helped my skin through the years is that I don’t wear too much makeup.⁣ ⁣ I have days makeup free where I only wear a good moisturizer and sunblock.⁣ ⁣ I do love makeup but as we age less is more, I love light coverage and cream blushes that just give a hint of color.⁣ ⁣ My minimal makeup is blush, thats the only thing I wear if I just want to have a bit if color and my favorite is @glossier cloud paint in storm, all of their shades are so pretty but storm is my fave.⁣ ⁣ What is your minimal makeup? Just one or two products you can’t live without.

People sometimes say: I’m not ready to have silver hair. After I chopped off all of my hennaed hair, a neighbor mentioned that he wasn’t ready to be married to a woman with silver hair. I don’t suppose I was ready for silver hair, either, when it started coming in at 18. But what are we really ready for? If I live long enough, I’ll have silver hair waaaaaaay longer than I had brown hair. I only had dark hair for the first 25 years or so of my life. By 30, my hair was streaked with silver. Now, at almost 44, my hair is mostly white. It was hard to let go of my image of myself with dark hair. But that was only me for a short time. And that was an innocent, insecure, inexperienced version of myself. We are always growing and changing. If anything, I’m not ready to be younger again. I like growing up. I hope to learn more. I hope I can become a better person as I go. 🌹🌹🌹 And I’m definitely not ready for whatever’s next. I just hope I can find the gift in it, halfway as easily as we’ve all been able to find the gift in silver hair. – – – – – – – – #embracethegrey #greyhairjourney #ditchthedye #greypride #openlygray #silverhairdontcare #naturalhairisdope #naturalhairisbeautiful #hiddengifts #allone

“Are you climbing the mountain to see the world? Or are you climbing the mountain for the world to see you?”⠀ Alexi Panos⠀ ⠀ This stuck a cord with me. Going from the woman who 3 years ago couldn’t find a picture of herself alone to “the year of the selfie” last year, I have to keep myself in check. Not only for my own ego, but because I have 4 littles taking in all the things I do. ⠀ ⠀ So why do I post selfies multiple times a week on social media? ⠀ ⠀ Is it solely to make me feel good? Is it so people will tell me how pretty I am? How good my hair and makeup look? Is it because “that’s what people want to see”? ⠀ ⠀ Or is it to be a light? To encourage others to step out and up? To document that you can LIFT and still remain grounded. ⠀ ⠀ Pondering that made me come to a big question- can we climb these mountains, because I firmly believe there isn’t just one, to see the view at the top while showing others it can be done? Or is that climbing just to be seen and not for the view? What do you think?
