When my husband and I bought our first home together in San Francisco in 2005 (terrible time to buy real estate, btw), I tried to keep things minimal in our hardwood-floored, glass covered, sleek condo. Minimalism and a lack of color were trends at the time, so I was inclined to reign in my bohemian tendencies, for better or worse.
It was better, perhaps, for my husband. He equates my style with clutter, which may have something to do with the exploding clothing situation in our bedroom and who can blame him. But texture and pattern don’t have to mean messy and disorganized. Just check out these Instagram accounts and you’ll see what I mean.
What brought me out of my minimalist funk? Well, my mother-in-law brought me gorgeous kilim pillows from Iran, Costco stocked enormous sheepskin rugs, we moved into a house with wall-to-wall shag carpet, and I bought a rattan hanging chair.
The result is that I feel quite at home in my home.
I guess it just goes to show you can’t fight your own deep-seeded predilections. And why would you want to? Feeling comfortable in one’s own skin (and, consequently, in one’s own home) is one of the things that makes getting older tolerable and, maybe, a pleasure?
If you, too, love a wild home with tons of texture, take a look at these Instagram accounts for kindred spirits and plenty of inspiration.
